The tent is drying, sleeping bags are being ventilated and the washing machine is turning it's cycles. We have just returned from the annual Ascension Day weekend with our motorcycle friends (the Renegades). Altough most was old and familiar, something was different. This time we went on route with the Sena SMH10 (bluetooth bike-to-bike communication set) and we really liked it.

It seemed convenient to us to have an intercom set for our trip. Making it easier to communicate with each other and listen to GPS instructions. In the past we had a bike-to-bike communication set, but it turned out to be very disappointing. So frankly we were a bit suspicious. Preferably we would have had the opportunity to try out different devices. But it turned out to be impossible.

The fact that we read so many good reviews about the Sena SMH10 and that we could purchase it for a very reasonable price, made us take the gamble. To us the major advantages of the Sena, over other brands, are the ease of use and that it allows charging while in use.

Last Tuesday (on his birthday), Sander picked up the set. The same evening we quickly built the sets in our helmet, for a brief test. One thing was immediately clear. The volume is more than enough and the sound quality is excellent.

After properly installing the headsets in our helmets on Wednesday evening, we had Thursday till Sunday for a thorough testing of the Sena SMH10. As we still don't have any suitable 12 volt plugs on our motorcycles, we were unable to recharge the sets. Nevertheless, they almost maintained for four days! Until well on our way back home they finally gave up. So there's nothing wrong with the battery life. The same applies for the sound, which is clear to understand even on the highway. The range isn't bad either. 500 meters in the open field is not a problem. If the distance gets greater or with a lot of obstables in the way, the sound distorts. But to us it is more than sufficient.

Two things we did have to get used to, have to do with setting up and terminating a communication channel. If both riders (more or less) simultaneously press the button, the system acts like the button is pressed twice and nothing happens. We sorted out this 'issue' by agreeing the front rider always disconnects. The other thing has to do with the GPS instructions. They have precedence over an intercom conversation which can be annoying if you're riding somewhere, where a lot of instructions are given. As it makes it impossible to establish or terminate a connection. Of course this feature can be disabled.

De tent hangt te drogen, de slaapzakken hangen te luchten en de wasmachine staat aan. We zijn net terug van het jaarlijkse Hemelvaart weekend met onze motorvrienden van the Renegades. Hoewel er veel oud en vertrouwd was, was er ook iets anders. Dit keer gingen we namelijk voor het eerst op pad met de Sena SMH10 (bluetooth bike-to-bike intercom set) en dat is zeer goed bevallen.

Het leek ons handig voor onze reis een intercom set te hebben. Zodat het wat makkelijker wordt om met elkaar te communiceren en om GPS instructies op te volgen. In het verleden hebben we een portofoon setje gehad, maar dat viel enorm tegen. Dus we waren eerlijk gezegd een beetje wantrouwig. Het liefst hadden we de mogelijkheid gehad om verschillende sets uit te proberen. Maar dat is helaas niet mogelijk.

Het is dat we zulke goede geluiden over de Sena SMH10 hoorden en we hem voor een meer dan schappelijke prijs konden aanschaffen, dat we de gok wel durfden te nemen. Grote pluspunten van de Sena ten opzichte van de andere merken, waren voor ons het bedieningsgemak en het feit dat hij op te laden is tijdens het gebruik.

Sander heeft afgelopen dinsdag (op zijn verjaardag) de set opgehaald. En nog dezelfde avond hebben we de set vluchtig in de helmen ingebouwd voor een kleine test. Eén ding was meteen duidelijk. Het geluidniveau is meer dan voldoende en de kwaliteit prima.

Na op woensdagavond de headsets netjes in de helmen weggewerkt te hebben, was het van donderdag tot en met zondag tijd om de Sena SMH10 aan een grondige test te onderwerpen. Omdat we nog geen geschikte 12 volt aansluiting op de motoren hadden, waren we niet in de gelegenheid de sets bij te laden. Ze hebben het desondanks bijna vier dagen volgehouden. Pas ver op de terugweg gaven ze er de brui aan. De levensduur van de accu is dus niks mis mee. Zo ook niet met het geluid dat op de snelweg nog prima is te verstaan. En het bereik is ook niets mis mee. 500 meter in het open veld is geen probleem. Wordt de afstand groter of zitten er veel obstakels in de weg, dan vervormt het geluid. Maar dat is voor ons ruimschoots voldoende.

Twee zaken waar we wel aan hebben moeten wennen, hebben te maken met het maken/verbreken van een intercom verbinding. Als beide rijders min of meer tegelijkertijd op de knop drukken, dan doet het systeem of er twee keer op de knop is gedrukt en gebeurt er dus feitelijk niets. We hebben dit 'probleem' opgelost door af te spreken dat de voorste rijder altijd de verbinding verbreekt. Het andere punt heeft te maken met de GPS instructies. Deze hebben voorrang op een intercom gespek. Dit kan wel eens als irritant worden ervaren, als je ergens rijdt waar veel instructies gegeven worden. Het is dan namelijk niet mogelijk om een verbinding op te zetten dan wel te verbreken.
