Fitting the tank

We just watched how the tank fits the motorcycle and how it influences the riders position. There seems to be only one problem.

According to some, the Africa Twin tank offers limited leg room, so we want to check if that's a problem before we start any transformation. The removal of the Transalp fairing and tank has become quite a routine. At first we don't see any major issues, When we put the Africa Twin tank on the motorcycle. One of the crankcase breathers is blocking the tank and one of the petcocks is a little close to the oil line, but that probably won't cause any serious problems.

Unfortunately the seat is. The Africa Twin tank is sloping much steeper, thus forcing the front of the stock Transalp seat all the way up. Annoying because we just recently have had the seats upholstered and to have an Africa Twin seat modified at this point is a bridge too far. Luckely someone of the Transalp forum is willing to modify the tank. Just let's give that a try, as we're currently running out of options.

Even gekeken hoe de tank eigenlijk op de motor past en hoe dat dan zit. Er is slechts één probleem.

Volgens sommigen biedt de tank van de Africa Twin te weinig beenruimte, dus dit willen we eerst controleren voordat we aan het ombouwen gaan beginnen. Het verwijderen van de Transalp tank en kuipdelen is ondertussen al aardig routine geworden. Als we de Africa Twin tank er op leggen, zien we op het eerst gezicht geen noemenswaardige problemen. Eén van de benzinekraantjes komt wat dicht langs de olieleiding, maar dat zal waarschijnlijk geen grote problemen op gaan leveren.

Het zadel doet dat helaas wel. De Africa Twin tank loopt veel stijler omhoog, waardoor de voorkant van een standaard Transalp zadel helemaal omhoog gedrukt wordt. Vervelend want we hebben juist de originele zadels opnieuw laten bekleden en om nu weer een Africa Twin zadel te laten aanpassen gaat toch iets te ver. Gelukkig is er op het Transalp forum iemand bereid de tank aan te passen. Laten we dat maar proberen, want veel andere opties hebben we op dit moment niet.
